February 20-26 is NEDA's Eating Disorders Awareness Week!
Here are a few great websites to tickle your fancy regarding this serious issue:
~Ways to get involved, provided by the Association for Anorexia Nervosa and Related Disorders
~Operation Beautiful is participating in NEDAwareness week with recovery-oriented notes and recovery stories
~"Beauty is NOT how skinny you can be!"....This is one of my all-time favorite videos that always cheers me up when I'm having a bad day.
~Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty is such a great resource for young girls
~Gurze Books is awesome--they feature books on every topic related to eating disorders, mental and physical health, and self-esteem. Check it out!
~Something Fishy is a wonderful online community dedicated to recovery. It is a great place to go for support and friendship.
Even if you do nothing else this week, try to be kind to yourself and to others. <3
Can't we have a supportive campaign that doesn't emphasize beauty at all? I'm funny-looking, and I'm okay with that, my eating disorder isn't an extension of cultural insecurity and vanity. Blah. Real beauty isn't all sizes, it whatever quirk makes you interesting to yourself and others - a sense of humor, intelligence, etc.
ReplyDeleteElara, you make a really good point. I agree that people often misconceive eating disorders as being all about outer image, beauty, and a drive to be "thin" or "pretty". They are definitely WAY more complicated than that, and are always about deeper issues. Thanks for pointing that out and bringing it to my attention. Have a good day! :-)
ReplyDeleteHi! Found your blog through a comment about celebrity fashion and totally agree with your disgust.
ReplyDeleteI'm a psych person, too!
